An InRoads user asked for Mark's help on renaming a vertical alignment :

Hi Mark!

I have a question for you.  I created a vertical alignment and didn't realize that the placeholder "left ditch" was active.  I wanted it to be called "PGL".  I couldn't figure out how to change the name; so I deleted the blank PGL; copied "left ditch" and called it "PGL"; then emptied "left ditch".  Is there a quicker way to rename a vertical alignment?

Here is the Zen Dude's response:

Hi Lisa!

How are you? If you are actively using InRoads you have to be doing well!!

: )

As far as what happened to you, you know, that happens all the time! ...and at least it was under the correct Horizontal alignment!

What you did to resolve it is pretty common, but there's another way as you suspected. ...Geometry > Rename Geometry

This dialog box has two pieces - From (at the top) and To (at the bottom).

The Type options at the top allow you to rename the Geometry Project, or Horizontal Alignment or Vertical Alignment. Just set that to what you want to do.

Then, define the "From" ...what you currently have that you want to rename. If you are changing the name of a Vertical Alignment you have to make sure that the correct Projectand Horizontal are defined here (just use the drop down pick boxes in the From area).

If you are doing the Vertical, any Verticals that you have under that Horizontal will be in the list box in the middle. Pick the one you want to rename.

Once you select the Vertical, the To area will be populated with the same information as the original.

Then go into the bottom area and redefine the Name. You can also add a Description and change the Style at the same time.

Now, since you had the name of the Vertical already created (in your case PGL) you wouldn't be able to 'reuse' that name, and would have had to delete it before re-entering it here. Otherwise you will end up with a message saying that you have a Duplicate alignment name in the InRoads Status area ... which you might not even notice ... especially if you aren't looking for it.

Once you do execute this command you'll get a message confirming ... are you sure you really want to do this? ...say Yes ... unless you were just kidding around ... then say No. ; )

You should immediately see the change in that dialog box.

Now that you totally know how to use this tool in the future ... I'll give you a bonus tip!!! Aren't you glad you asked me about this!!? You are really getting your nickel's worth ; )

For the future, there is a tool that was designed to show you at a glance what the "Active" information is. And it will allow you to change it by just selecting the information from the drop downs that are created. This tool has to be turned on under Tools > Application Add-insand is called Active Project Settings Add-in.

Just toggle it on once you get into that area.

Then you'll see it as another tool under the InRoads Main Menu > Tools, so just click on it and that dialog box will appear.

That dialog was intended to be opened and left open somewhere in the corner so you can always see what's 'Active' and change it as needed.

That should do it!!

Let me know if you have any questions ...and enjoy your time with InRoads!!

Civilly yours,

-zen
