A student in one of Mark's recent training classes asked for his help with this question:

Sometimes when I'm working in InRoads Survey, the display toggles stop working. For instance, I'll toggle on the Planimetrics but they won't show anything, and I know there is data in the fieldbook because it was viewing earlier just fine.

Here is the Zen Dude's response:

When working with a fieldbook, this problem can sometimes happen and the first impulse is to get concerned that something happened to your data. I don't know exactly when it started, but something definitely occurred with the software during one of the V8i SS updates because all of a sudden this issue came up, and it didn't exist before. This is one of those issues that I don't know exactly why it's happening, but I know how to fix the problem. It's just a display issue; the data is fine.
You can replicate this problem easily if you ever want to show someone.
InRoads Survey is opened, a Fieldbook is created, and data is uploaded to it (or it's just opened with data already in it).
The display toggles work as expected.
Like I mentioned, I don't know why this happens but I'll show you how to create it, and then how recover from it.
In this instance, I have a Fieldbook open, as well as the Book 1, default fieldbook that is always there when you open the software.
Now, right-click and Close that fieldbook, so you are only left with the one that you created, and try to view something from the remaining fieldbook.
The menu in the picture above shows all of the display toggles turned on, yet only the Codes are being viewed. Fitting the view in MicroStation and any other activity doesn't seem to recover the display (at least I haven't found any other way except what I'm going to show next).
The 'fix' is to set another fieldbook Active, and then go back and set the fieldbook with the display problem Active, and the display problem will be fixed.
In the case of only having one fieldbook, there is no way to do this, except for creating a New 'dummy' fieldbook, setting that 'dummy' fieldbook as Active, and then setting your 'real' fieldbook Active.
And there you have it. Back to normal and business as usual.
This is one that you will just have to deal with time to time, because with the software efforts at Bentley moved heavily onto the next version, this oddity is likely to remain in the software.
Enjoy!!!
