Zen Engineering maintains a logbook of work done for each idea that it produces.
Basic ‘zen’ log book rules:
a) This log book is done in permanent pen or marker, not pencil
b) No pages are to be torn out of the log book
c) Log book notes are made at the beginning, during and after each work period
d) Each new entry (“start, during and ending” is one entry) is begun on a new page
e) Place an ‘X’ over any mistake or voided entry or notation
f) Place an ‘X’ over any blank spaces not used on a page
g) Use permanent glue to add any photos or computer printouts into the book
A Zen ‘start’ log book entry will contain the following:
• Date / Time / Entry author / Location of work
• Others involved in the work at this time and present
• What am I going to try to accomplish during this period of work
‘During’ logs:
• Progress sketches / Brainstorming ideas / Other probable directions
• Anything ‘notable’ that could be used for reference in the future
A Zen ‘close’ log book entry will be made containing the following:
• A summary of what was accomplished during this period of work
• Note any conclusions that can be stated “for the record”
• Who was involved in the work
• What direction should the next work period take in forwarding this product
• Date / Time / Entry author
If several people are working on very different aspects of a single product there may be more than one entry per day.
